Used to finding quiet places when she needed to think and contemplate, Heidy had found that a part of nine that surrounded the aeroshuttle, also had a range of windows with wide sills with loungers backed up against them. There she leaned on the sill proving herself up by elbows, staring out into the swirling storms of plasma that made up the Badlands, that were beginning to thin as the Pioneer headed for the outer edge.

Her research the previous afternoon, coupled with spending a shift watching the prisoners they had taken as a result of events, had maybe helped her understanding of the situation, but also hadn't, her roots were coming into play, there was an undercurrent of sympathy she could feel developing. It was was becoming more and more difficult to shake that she came from a similar background.

Alta Terra. Her place of birth, the place she was raised, was also a colony. As could be expected it was a single industry setup, the mining of a specific mineral that was exported. Granted there were a number of differences, the Alta Terra system had good ties to a number of core Federation production companies, ties that made them important enough to be on Starfleets protection lists. It also was well inside the operational area of Starfleets 2nd Fleet, thirty-eight light-years inside to be exact, which accounted for the regular visits Heidy recalled as a child.

But she also knew that beyond the 2nds regular routes space was not so friendly, half truths she remembered growing up, were seen as partially true when she examined the facts as part of Starfleet. The area beyond those thirty-eight light-years was occasionally a haven for pirate activity, curtailed but the 2nd at times but not completely ended.

That was the catalyst for a what if........... What if the were on the edge of that AO, what if the made them less valuable in some eyes, what if they had to endure raids and terror to a point before action was taken by the organisation she served..........

Would there have been a seed of bitterness in her, would she have looked at Starfleet in the same light of hope and wonder and discovery, or would she have felt abandoned, felt justified in taking matters into her own hands to protect her family, friends, neighbours. More importantly where would that justification have ended.

Is that how this New Maquis started? Protecting what was theirs and lost sight of the end?

The plasma storms came into focus once more, as Heidy turned these questions over and over. Hopeing for an answer, but as yet none seemed to be available. Those plasma storms.
