Mission: Episode 3 - Weary Travellers
Location: Gym
Timeline: MD001 2203 Hrs

Although a reasonably active person in the past, Heidy had found that the more martial side of her job description, meant that her once or twice a month workout sessions were no longer adequate, weekly sessions were now needed to keep up. So she found herself in the ships gymnasium area, ready to go though her paces once more, this was the hardest part of the session for her the act of getting going.

She preferred to stretch while changing and walking through to the equipment, first stop was a spell on the treadmill, a little running to get the legs into gear. At this point she noticed the large form of the ships XO, she'd heard the talk, the mountain man, but to be truth they didn't quite do him justice.

Darf walked in on a semi mission. One of the easiest ways he found to reduce stress was by sweating it out. Most people look at him and would not guess that he would have sweat glands. They would be wrong. As he scanned the Gym it was pretty empty but he say a young tiny crew member hoping up on the treadmill.

He made his way over to her. "Great minds think alike." He quipped.

"It would appear so, sir." She responded with a smile dialling the setting for a brisk jog to start with, feeling a little intimidated by the imposing size and the fact he was at the top end of the command structure, they always seemed a little imposing to her. "Got to stay in shape if I'm gonna keep up." Another glance up at him, flashing a uncertain smile she added. "I guess in your case it's keeping out in front."

"Something like that." As Darf knelt down and started to adjust his gravity compensator. He had not run on a treadmill in a few years but he thought when in Yisha... "Care if I join you?" He asked as he stepped up on a treadmill and set the speed to a slow jog.

"Sure." She replied simply and with a glance over, before turning to look straight ahead for the time being, despite feeling a little uneasy and a small part of her expecting a informal, formal chat about something or other, Heidy was by nature a people person. "How are you settling in, sir?"

As Darf started to job he pondering the question. He had gotten asked this a lot it seems. "Seem to be finding my grove so far. The crew is very...." He was about to finish his thought when the unthinkable happened and as he brought his big right foot down it went right through the treadmill and the whole machine bucked as his leg was pinned and stopped the operation. "AHHHHH" Darf let out a groan. Luckily for everyone when the machine started to fall apart and fall over it fell to the right away from Heidy.

The halted responce, the snap of machinery, the groan, all seemed to come at once. Dialing down her own machine to a stop, Heidy burst into a cackle. "Apologies, sir, are you better off than the Treadmill?"

Darf grabbed at his leg which was still pinned in the treadmill. "Not sure, can you give me a hand." He said from his spot on the floor looking up at her in pain.

Realising that he was in some sort of discomfort, she dropped the jovial attitude and scrambled to help, crouching on the opposite side she looped both arms arround the treadmill. "Of course, Sir, how about a bit of counter traction." Setting her position to brace a little more effectively, she started to lean away slightly. "On three. One. Two. Three!"

As she pulled the treadmill in one direction Darf was able to move his foot the other way. He came free and slumped back on the floor. That hurt like the dickens. "I guess the treadmill is a no go for me."

"Maybe pounding the decks if you need to get them legs working woukd work out better." Heidy suggested as she stood up again, she hadn't quite finished running but decided to come back to it. "You alright do we need to get you a medic?"

"No, I think I will be ok. Where my people lack grace we make up on durability." He said with a chuckle making his way to his feet. "Looks like today may be arms and back day." He said as he rotated his ankle.

"Sounds like a hefty session." She replied while walking over to one of the sit down leg weight machines, setting down a small towel and a drinks bottle. "So you were saying how you were settling in?"

"Seems to be going pretty good. It is a fine crew we have here." Darf said as he made his way over to a incline bench press

"Yeah, you've got some very experienced folks knocking around." Heidy agreed, the barest hint of exertion in her voice. "You looking forward to spending some time in Cardassian space? Or is this not your first time in these parts?"

Darf finished his first set while she was talking and as he racked the bar he replied. "I spent some time working Ops on the Wyoming during the war so I am pretty well versed in the region. How about you?" He asked as he got ready to start his next set.

"Just come off eighteen months tour on the Inuit , mostly humanitarian duties." She responded, pausing her activity, and reaching for water. "It's changed a little since the war but there's still plenty to do around here, guess that why these such a heavy presence still."

"Yeah and the discovery you guys made of a New Maquis I am guessing our presence will only increase." Darf said as he finished his set and wiped his face off.

"Yeah I would imagine it will." She responded with a sigh, before starting then thinking better of it. "Although.........Never mind."

Darf wasn't sure why she had stopped. He was going to move to a different set when he looked over at her. "Whats on your mind?"

"My worry is this is going devolve into a 'hunt them down' scenario, based of the actions of a few radical individuals, and ignoring any underlying reason others may have of joining them." Heidy blurted out after a moment of thought, her lingering concern for those who might just have wanted a better life and ended up on a wrong path, while not evident was playing on her mind.

"That is a valid concern considering reactions in the past. As for them openly attacking you in the Badlands is a real issue and poses a threat to the fragile stability of the region." Darf countered.

"All the more reason to address the cause before this gets out of hand." She retorted, and for a brief moment realized who she was talking to and potentially how forcefully. "No one needs another conflict now, even a small scale one. I don't mean to speak out of turn, but there you go."

"No, your words ring a lot of truth in them." He said as he noticed his ankle was starting to swell some. "I think it maybe best if I get off this foot."

Looking across, she then stood and walked to the bench, then turned and made for the small kit on a nearby wall. "Yeah that would be best. Let's get some cooling on that as well." Flicking the case from the wall she returned, opening the case on the floor, selecting a bandage-like strip with a small metal strip at one end. "This will help but you should probably get this looked at incase there's issues we can't see."

"Doc is going to be tired of seeing me." he said with a chuckle. "Thanks for the assist."

Wrapping the bandage around the foot, then activating the cooling matrix. "Ahh you given them something to do. I always say Docs would get bored without people to treat." Heidy quipped as she sat back on her heals. "So are you going or do I have to take you down."

"Darf stood trying not to put a ton of preesure on it. "It feels much better already, thank you. I think I am going to go elevate it and let your cooling do its work."

Standing up, there came an awkward moment when she wasn't sure what to do, continue to assist or go back to her workout. "It was the bandage-like thing doing the cooling, but thank you. Need a hand getting anywhere?"

"No. I can manage, sorry for interrupting your workout." He said as he started to hobble out the door.

Heidy watched him leave with a confused look across her face, here was a command officer who'd actually listened to her for a moment, maybe things were changing at the top, maybe her preconceptions were all wrong, maybe this would be a good posting. She shrugged to herself as the door closed and went back to her leg exercises.
