Tyler knew it to be a bit unorthodox but he was curious. He knew that in the fallout from Hobus more and more Romulans were joining the fleet. But it still felt a little off to him. Yesterday he had read that Starfleet had approved his request for a Romulan officer to lead his Science team. So curiosity had gotten the better of him, and he thought to meet the officer at the airlock and give him a tour personally.

He saw the Romulan come through the airlock as he wore his Starfleet teal uniform. "Jolan tru Lieutenant and welcome to the Pioneer."

Nerves gripped Vaebn as he approached the airlock door. "So many assignments prior to this, and many tours across the Empire, but this airlock door may as well lead into the void itself." he thought. He absently brushed off the front of his uniform.

Now that was a novel thought, his uniform; his first true Starfleet uniform on the day of his first assignment. There goes the nerves again. He took a deep breath, moved his bag a little higher up on his shoulder and prepared to activate the door release. "A new beginning. Sometimes a fresh slate is needed to reorient the mind and body." he thought.

"Welcome to your second first day Vaebn," he said under his breath. And with that, he strode forward and opened the airlock door.

Before him stood his new CO, familiar with his appearance from his Starfleet records. "Jolan tru Lieutenant and welcome to the Pioneer." he said to Vaebn. "Jolan Tru sir. I see you have brushed up on your Rihannsu prior to my arrival. While I do appreciate it, I believe a more common greeting would be Good Morning sir. Permission to come aboard?"

Tyler smiled at the enigma that stood before him. "Permission granted. I trust that your journey here was not too arduous." He said as he motioned for Vaebn to enter. "Shall we to your quarters first so that you may stow your gear. Then I thought I would give you a tour of the ship. The science facilities are top of the line."

Vaebn allowed a slight smile to cross his face, "The trip here was not, however the longer journey........ that is a different tale. A tour, on the other hand would be nice. I haven't been able to completely familiarize myself with the entire ships plans yet, so I look forward to seeing more of it. And she is much larger than the last Starfleet vessel I worked on."

"Indeed, fifteen decks capable of breaking atmo and landing among many other strong capabilities. Your quarters are on deck 2, and the bridge of course is deck 1 so we should start there. Unlike a many of my comrades, I view science to be key to any mission that we are on. As such I expect a member of your department to be manning the Science station on the bridge at all times. You, shall be there on Alpha Shift. So, tell me what is your scientific specialty? Your record was a little, fuzzy, shall we say when it came to that information." Tyler fell into pace with the man as they walked toward the turbolift.

"It still amazes me that Starfleet built an intersteller vessel that could land on the surface of a planet. It must truly be an interesting experience to make that trip. And I will make certain that you are never lacking a science officer on the bridge. I am grateful that you respect the sciences in such a way, and look forward to giving you my insight and advice in any matter. " Vaebn followed his CO into the turbolift.

"Bridge," Malbrooke stated to the tubolift as the doors closed behind them.

"As to my specialty, I hold advanced degrees in Astrometrics and Astrophysics from the Romulan Astrophysical Academy, and I am very handy around astrometrics sensors and mapping of stellar 'anomalies.' Our technology however, is not always used for pure scientific purposes, if you follow my meaning. I do not want to start on the wrong foot, as you say, but there are things that I am not entirely at liberty to speak of at this time; Sir."

At that moment, the doors opened to reveal the bridge of the Pioneer, giving Vaebn a moment of relief. He would tell Cmdr Malbrooke everything, but first meetings, perhaps, were not the right time.

"Well then Lieutenant you will enjoy our Astrometrics lab on deck 8 we have one of the most extensive labs not on a space station." Tyler led the man to the station located fore and and port of the command ring on the bridge. "This is the science station, which allows access to all of the readings from all of the science labs on board. The medical labs as you are no doubt aware are the purview of the Chief Medical Officer." Tyler noticed the looks that people were giving to the two of them. It would take some getting used to a Romulan in Starfleet uniform.

Tyler overheard two junior officers as they made some unkind remarks about Vaebn. He turned to his science chief, "Excuse me a moment Lieutenant..." He very sternly turned on his heel and addressed the two officers in question. "Pardon me, but that man is a senior officer on my ship. If you have any problems with him serving here. You keep your comments to yourself and report you queries directly to me. If there is no issue than I suggest you return to your duties and say nothing more. If not you will cease to be an officer on my bridge or on my ship. Is This Understood..." The two officers snapped to attention as Tyler spoke, "Yes Sir..." they replied. Tyler then turned back to Vaebn "Sorry about that some of the juniors still need to get used to it."

"Unfortunately, they may never truly get used to it. Although it has all happened before, and will happen again. I am just one more in a long line of, to pardon the comment, Pioneers in Starfleet. I'm sure it was just as difficult for the first Vulcans and Andorians as well. I shall persevere."

Vaebn looked around the bridge and nodded to himself. "This is much more aesthetically pleasing than some of the Romulan vessels I have served on. I could certainly get comfortable working here." he said as he ran his hand along the edge of the control panel to the science station. "Although, I believe you said that you have an advanced astrometrics lab where I will be working most often, as well as an office? I'm quite looking forward to having a fully operational lab for my studies and research again."

Tyler and Vaebn turned back to the turbolift, and left the bridge behind and proceeded to Deck 8 and the Science Labs.

Hmmm he didn't bat an eye at the comments made on the bridge, Tyler thought. Tyler pointed out points of interest as they walker. As they stepped from the Turbolifts onto deck 8 Tyler noticed that the science department had begun to come to life since they now had a department head. "The labs are yours to do with as you see fit. However, mission related experiments always have the priority and anything of interest that arises from personal research must be shared with me."

They then stood in front of the Astrometrics lab. "This is Astrometrics, our lab is state of the art and has been augmented. The USS Voyager is an Intrepid Class vessel and when she returned from her extended mission, the vessel's astrometrics was augmented with Borg technology. That technology has been incorporated into all ships of the class that were created since," Tyler said. The two men entered the lab and it hummed to life. The large central screen shown the astral charts of the sector with Empok Nor and the Pioneer in the center.

"I understand to need for prioritization sir. This lab however, has exceeded my expectations." He stood in the center of the room and placed his bags on the floor while he took it all in. Stepping forward to the main terminal controls, Vaebn called up the specifications to the system. "Hmm...." he muttered aloud, "These systems are far beyond anything I have worked with before." A sly grin spread across his face and a twinkle of mirth appeared in his eyes; like a youth in a candy store. "If I ever appear to be lost, I highly suggest looking for me in here first Commander. Ideas are already forming and I hope to push these systems to their limits." Vaebn toured himself around the lab and took in every sight, knowing that he had already found his second home in the ship.

"As much as I wish I could set up shop in here and stay for the remainder of the voyage, I know that I have further duties. As your CSO, I should also familiarize myself with the other labs. If you don't mind sir, I would like to do that later this afternoon, so perhaps I may drop my work bag in the office and proceed to my quarters and start getting settled in, unless of course, you have other ideas."

"Of course, of course. You will be quartered with the senior staff on Deck 2. See the Executive Officer Lt Commander Montgomery, and she can direct you to your quarters. I also encourage you to take advantage of all of the amenities that Empok Nor has to offer." Tyler smirked at the Romulan, he knew that Romulans did not share their Vulcan cousin's view on emotions. However, up until now this man hadn't lived up to that. "Any Questions?"

"I'm sure there will be questions in the near future sir, but for now, I think just getting settled in and exploring my new surroundings would be in my best interests. And I shall take your suggestion, under advisement. The station did seem rather lively, and perhaps it would help me, adjust, to the ship and crew." Vaebn retrieved his bags, "With your permission sir, I'll see Lt Cmdr Montgomery and see to my quarters."

Commander Malbrooke nodded, "If you need anything else, I'll be around. Welcome aboard Lieutenant, dismissed." "Thank you sir." Vaebn replied as he walked out the door.

As the door closed behind him, Vaebn breathed a sigh of relief and let his shoulders relax. "The Commander is not what I thought he would be." Vaebn thought to himself as he returned to the turbolift; "I'm sure things will relax and I can be more of myself with these people. This is my new home now, and it has all the potential of my old one."

Tyler stood in Astrometrics and realized something very important. It had started to come together, not the crew that he wanted but the family that he wanted.
