Mission: Carthage Rises
Location: USS Carthage - Security Department
Timeline: MD001 1000 hrs

Daan had been prepping the Carthage for departure for what seemed like weeks now. It probably was a dramatisation of feelings but he wanted things to be just right for the new Captain and First Officer.

He had heard the XO was on board and doing rounds so he had his team running drills and had called in a favour with medical so that they could learn basic skills, just in case. Everyone was busy.

Daan was in his office working on a new roster. The influx of new officers and enlisted had gave him quite a headache as he tried to match skills had to certain areas. Some of his old team still remained, but there were a lot of new faces.

Anahera walked into the Security Department and made a beeline for the Chief's office and activated the chime.

Breaking from his reverie Daan looked at his door and shook his head. "Come in." he replied as the doors swooshed open and revealed the ships XO Lt. Commander Chernova.

Daan rose from his chair as a sign of respect for her, "Commander, what can I do for you?" he asked.

"Good day, Lieutenant." Anahera said. "I'm just introducing myself and making sure every department has what they need before launch." She paused a moment. "So, I'm Lieutenant Commander Anahera Chernova, the new XO, Lieutenant, does your department have all it needs?"

"Nice to meet you, ma'am." Daan replied. "Yes, we are just about set. I am just waiting on the Quartermaster confirming the last shipment of phaser rifles coming in and we are good to go. All staff are on board and I'm just working on a roster now."

"Good, I'll see what I can do about giving the Quartermaster a hurry up. Knowing how things are at the moment, you'll probably get some crates full of parts, that you have to assemble yourself." Anahera said.

"Ah he's usually quick enough, but I welcome any kick up his backside to get them here quicker." Daan grinned. "But as you say, it seems Starfleet manufacturing want to do less and less these days. I have noticed they sometimes send component crates instead of ready assembled inventory." he sighed. "How are you finding the Carthage so far?"

"Good, though so far I've only seen the Bridge, the Captain's Ready Room, some corridors and now Security." Anahera said. "The Ensign you put on the airlock door is doing a good job, by the way."

"Thank you. They've proven themselves quite capable since I joined the Carthage. I see potential in them so I am quietly giving them more responsibilities to see if they have what it takes to make an Assistant Chief." Daan replied with a proud nod. "We will see though... management isn't for everyone." he joked.

"It can be a difficult choice. I remember when I was a Security Chief, I had a Lieutenant who appeared to be a perfect candidate for Assistant Chief. I tried them out at the role, they worked hard, but it just wasn't the best fit for them. In the end I assigned them as Brig officer and they thrived in the position." Anahera said.

"Just shows you that everyone has their niche area. I found brig duty quite tedious." Daan offered honestly. "But I was never one for being stuck behind a console too long. I like the freedom to move around, train and whatnot." he added.

"I agree." Anahera said. "I sometimes miss security, not just the fighting and shooting, but the camaraderie and the feeling that comes from helping people." She said. "Starfleet can be a bit restraining though, all the rules and regulations. When I was a free-agent, I got to choose my jobs. Of course there were rules then too, but if I saw someone in distress, I could help them right away, and not have to sit on my hands while diplomats argued over jurisdiction and quid pro quo." She laughed. "Now, I follow the regs, well the spirit of them anyway."

"Ah you've still got that team spirit ma'am. You're always welcome to sit in on drills, take part if you like. We'd be happy to have you." Daan smiled. "Being a free agent must have been nice." Daan cast his imagination wide. "Red tape can be quite frustrating for us when all you want to do is get stuck in and help someone."

"Thank you, Lieutenant." Anahera said. "I'll do that." She smiled. "Being a free agent wasn't always fun, in my time, I've pissed off the Klingons, Romulans, Cardassians, the Orion Syndicate, the Breen and a few other peoples that the Federation haven't even accounted yet."

Daan laughed, "So what you are saying is, I'll have my work cut out for me keeping you safe?" he asked. It was half serious, half in jest.

"In a word, yes." Anahera said. "Don't worry, I'll help out." She added with a smile.

"Well as long as you've not forgotten how to use a phaser, Commander." Daan joked.

"You just point it at the target and push the button, right?" Anahera said. "If all else fails I could hit them. My right hand is a metallo-plastic composite."

"I'll be sure to stay out of the way of your right hook." Daan laughed.

Anahera laughed too. "While, I'm here could certify my personal side arm. Its a modified type-II phaser cira 2287." She said taking it from her belt, twirling it around her finger and handing it to him.

"Wow." Daan took the weapon. "This is in great condition." he balanced it in his hand and felt the weight of it. "Still got original components, or have you had it upgraded to a more modern power core and beam?" he asked as he began searching on his PADD for the certificate on the ships computer.

"I upgraded it myself, I have the original components somewhere." Anahera said. "I grew up in the 22nd century, so I prefer a side arm with a trigger guard and is vaguely pistol shaped."

Daan nodded. "Well given your appearance and comment I can only assume you are El Aurian." he didn't look up from the weapon as he placed it on the desk. He then lifted the PADD which scanned the weapon and he proceeded to press a few things. "Just need your thumbprint here Commander and you are certified for the weapon." he flipped the PADD around to show a small box for her to press.

"Only on my mother's side, my father was human and I grew up on Earth." Anahera replied placing her thumb on the small box.

"Thank you." Daan took the PADD back and began to read through it to make sure it was kosher. "Where on Earth was your father from?" he asked making small talk whilst he finished up.

"Ukraine, near Odesa. I was born there too, my mother was posing as a human at the time. I didn't find out she was El-Aurian, until after she left us and my father drank himself to death." Anahera replied.

"I'm sorry to hear about your father, a death is never easy but to have it happen in such a way must have been difficult." Daan let that hang for a second without realising. "Also must have came as a shock that you were half a different species. The slow aging thing must be challenging, right?" he asked.

"My father's death was long ago, but I still hold my mother responsible." Anahera said. "I must admit, discovering I was half El-Aurian came as something of a shock." She added. "My decreased aging has its ups and downs. Getting served alcohol at a bar, when you look like a teenager, but are actually in your 30s is a kind of a drag, let me tell you."

Daan nodded when she mentioned the passing of her father being some time ago. He had no doubt she'd lived for a while given the weapon she'd given him. However, he did laugh at the mention of getting served at a bar. "I still get that trouble even now." Daan knew all too well. His youthful looks often afforded less than welcome attitudes.

"Don't worry, Daan, next time we're both in a bar, I'll order the drinks." She said with a wicked smile.

"Sounds like a plan, Commander." Daan smiled. "Is there anything else I can do for you?" he asked.

"Not at the moment." Anahera said. "I'll let you get back to it." Pausing a moment she added. "Oh, and if I find those phaser rifles, I'll let you know."

"Sounds good, Commander. Thank you." Daan replied as he watched the woman leave his domain. She seemed nice and he was looking forward to working with her.
