Mission: Episode 15 - The Evil That Lies Beneath
Location: Sick Bay - Deck 5 - USS Pioneer
Timeline: MD003 0800 hrs

The transition from the counselor's office to Sickbay was swift for Jordan Spencer. His strides were purposeful, echoing the disciplined gait of a former marine. As he approached the entrance to Sickbay on the Pioneer, he took a moment to steady his thoughts. The prospect of meeting Lieutenant Commander Hermia O'Rourke, the Chief Medical Officer, added a layer of anticipation to his already eventful day.

The automated doors slid open, revealing the well-organized and efficiently equipped Sickbay. Spencer's eyes quickly scanned the medical facilities, noting the location of various stations and equipment. The scent of antiseptic hung in the air, a familiar fragrance from countless hours spent in similar environments during his military service.

He spotted Lieutenant Commander O'Rourke at her desk, engrossed in what seemed like medical reports. Spencer approached with a blend of military respect and professional courtesy. Standing tall, he crisply saluted, his expression a mix of formality and readiness.

"Doctor Jordan Spencer, reporting as Assistant Medical Officer," he announced with a tone that conveyed both respect for the command structure and a readiness to fulfil his duties. The transition from a counselor's office to the domain of medical care felt like a seamless shift for Spencer, who was accustomed to adapting to different roles in service to a greater mission.

"At ease." Hermia said looking up from her reports. Her mind automatically went into tactical mode, something her father taught her and had become ingrained. Her mind examined Spencer looking for any weaknesses. He had the height advantage, but his weight would slow him down. Quick attacks to sensitive areas, would lead to victory.

"Welcome to Sickbay." Hermia said. "So what made you leave the Corps and become a doctor?"

"Thought there was more to life than taking it," Jordan replied noticing her sizing him up. He had read bits of her service record, to which had assisted with giving him some details, but it was the way that she quickly jumped straight to his marine background that perked his interest. "Have you figured out if I'm a threat or not?"

"You're no a threat, but I believe I could immobilize you, if you were to become one." Hermia said. Though she smiled her words were no joke.

Jordan Spencer maintained his composure, acknowledging the Chief Medical Officer's assessment with a wry smile. "Well, Doctor, I assure you, I'm here to heal, not to cause trouble," he replied, his tone a mix of confidence and a hint of playful banter.

"Besides, I find the realm of medicine offers a different kind of challenge—one that doesn't involve assessing potential threats or engaging in tactical maneuvers. It's about understanding the complexities of the human body and mind," he added, his words carrying a touch of flirtation while still maintaining a professional demeanor.

He took a moment to look around the well-organized Sickbay, appreciating the efficiency of the medical facilities. "I left the Corps to explore the healing side of life, to make a positive difference beyond the battlefield. And, of course, to meet intriguing individuals like yourself, Doctor," he concluded, the last part delivered with a charming half smile.

"I've found that the Marine training I underwent growing up, aided me in my medical studies." Hermia said. "Sometimes it helps to look at certain diseases in a tactical manner."

"Adapting and overcoming, be it on the battlefield or in medicine. Sounds like a tactical approach to both. Maybe you'll have to show me some of those strategic moves sometime," Jordan suggested as he held back a slight smirk.

"Perhaps." Hermia said returning his smirk. "So were you a Marine brat, like me?" She asked.

Jordan maintained his charismatic half-smile. "Well, Doctor, I wouldn't call myself a typical 'Marine brat,' but I did spend my fair share of time in the world of disciplined military living. Growing up on a farm in Kansas, my parents—both Colony scientists—instilled a strong work ethic and a love for the land in my sister and me."

His eyes briefly flickered, recalling the memories of his upbringing. "When I was 17, the call of service led me to the Starfleet Marine Corps. My initial intent was to follow the path of a Marine, and I did go through the training, but along the way, I discovered a passion for medicine. I wanted to contribute more than just on the battlefield."

"Okay, I'll talk you about your colleagues." Hermia said. "I'll begin with the Nursing staff. The Head Nurse is Sara MacCallum, she's a former Marine, like yourself, she has surgical training and answers to 'Mac'. Senior Nurse Kimba Rossi's parents own and run Rossi Pharmaceuticals, and due to her training, she is also our Pharmacist. Next is Nurse Felena Zarl who besides her normal nursing duties is our physical rehab specialist. Lastly is Nurse Otes Ze, along with his nursing duties, he helps out in the Pharmacy." Hermia said. "Are you keeping up?" She asked.

"Sure..." Jordan nodded slowly before a slight smirk. "They do all wear name tags, right?"

"No, but I'll be happy to point them out to you, if they don't introduce themselves first." Hermia replied. "Then there are the medical officers, Dr. Howard Goldberg is a medical officer and surgeon, Dr. Amelia Zano is a medical officer and a counselor, and Dr. Josh Randall is an excellent surgeon and will tell you this constantly. I've never understood the arrogance of surgeons, even though I am one." Hermia said. "And last but, not least there is Bones our EMH, who is based on Admiral/Doctor Leonard H. McCoy, complete with his Southern charm."

"It sounds like quite a team, but I haven't heard of an EMH that was based off of Admiral McCoy. Impressive," he asked interested. He leaned forward with a subtle grin. "Anything else I should know, or is that the tip of the iceberg?"

"Actually since Counselling comes under our department's umbrella there are a few more names for you to learn Lieutenant Vura is Chief Counsellor and tends to be a bit of a flirt. Zhara Rynn is a Counsellor with a Science background. Nina Lawson is the Counellor's Aide, I haven't met her, but I hear she's from Yorkshire. I've already mentioned Dr. Amelia Zano, but we also have a poodle named Sophie, she's our therapy dog."

"One last thing, Hermia said. You might see a Marine Sergeant working here occasionally, her name is Azure Thompson, she's a Corpsman, and does a few Sickbay shifts."

"Typically you do not see so many Marines merging with departments. I know Medical department typically sees more of the merge or additional assistance with medically trained Marines, I had seen in a briefing I received that Pioneer is seeing other departments merging Marines. Seems like a good thing, in my opinion," Jordan remarked as he processed the list of all the other personal. He had met Lieutenant Vura, and the statement of being a flirt, was accurate, to say the least.

"It is an interesting idea and it seems to be working, our XO and CoB are Marines, and Sergeant Thompson is a trained botanist, so she works with the Science Department too." Hermia said. "I don't know where she finds the time."

"If it were me, I'd put money on coffee. Lots of it," he remarked with a slight smirk. "Well boss, what do you need from me, Doctor?"

"For now I'd like you to familiarise yourself with the Sickbay and its staff." Hermia said. "Once you've done so, as ACMO, you'll be in charge of Delta Shift, but as CMO, I'm technically always on duty, should you need anything that the others can't help you with."

Jordan acknowledged the information with a nod. "Got it, Doctor. I'll familiarize myself with the staff and the layout. Managing Delta Shift won't be an issue. I've dealt with emergencies in the field, so I'll make sure it runs smoothly."

"Good." Hermia said.

An tall attractive woman with red hair and ice blue eyes, joined them. Giving Spencer the once over. "So this is the new ACMO." She said to Hermia. "Not bad, he looks like a Marine, Mac will love that."

To Spencer she said. "Welcome aboard, Lieutenant, I'm Nurse Kimba Rossi. Nice moustache, by the way." She added with a smile.

"Oh this place is full of so many surprises," Jordan replied trying to keep in mind that he was new and needed to try and be professional. "Its nice to meet you as well. So I'm assuming your nickname is 'Trouble'?"

"It wasn't, but it is now." Kimba said giving him a wink.

He chuckled and nodded before reaching his hand out. "Jordan Spencer, part time doctor, part time counselor, part time marine, full time pain-in-the-rear."

"Great to meet you 'Devil Doc'." Kimba said.

He smirked simply. "You as well. This won't be such a bad setup after all."

"Glad you like it." Hermia said. "Please excuse Kimba, she's from New York." She added with a smile.

"Well we all can't be perfect," Jordan remarked with a slight smirk. "But I'm the new guy, so I'll see what I can do to be ok with a New Yorker."

"She's okay really, just some find her a bit rough around the edges." Hermia said.

"Nothing wrong with that. She speaks her mind. Quite honestly, we need more people like that now a days. But that is my opinion," Jordan spoke freely without asking for permission.

"And I appreciate that about her." Hermia said. "I like my staff to feel they can talk to me."

"That also means adding me to that bunch. I may not be the most easiest person to deal with or handle. Just a heads up. But loyalty goes both ways, or rather that is the type of person I am," Jordan replied as he looked around. "New start, means new staff. This should be interesting."

Hermia laughed. "You'll fit right in." She said. "Now get yourself acquainted with everything, your first shift is tomorrow."

Jordan nodded, taking in the exchange with a mix of amusement and confidence. "Looking forward to it, Doctor," he replied with a nod to Hermia. With a casual glance at Kimba, he added, "And nice to meet you, Trouble. I'm sure we'll make a great team."

As he turned to leave, Jordan couldn't resist a parting shot. "Just remember, in this crew, I'm the one with the best mustache," he quipped with a playful grin before heading off to explore his new domain in Sickbay.

With a final nod of acknowledgement, Jordan turned to leave, already formulating his plans to familiarize himself with the Sickbay and its staff. "Consider it done. I'll see you tomorrow for my first shift," he replied, offering a salute before making his exit.

Exiting Sickbay, Jordan couldn't shake the smirk from his lips. This new assignment promised to be both challenging and intriguing, but he was ready to face whatever came his way. With a confident stride, he headed off to begin his preparations for the upcoming shift, eager to make his mark on the Pioneer's medical team.

Hermia rolled her eyes, and laughed to herself.
