Mission: Episode 15 - The Evil That Lies Beneath
Location: Sickbay - Deck 5 - USS Pioneer
Timeline: MD001 - 0800 hrs

A new ship and a new crew.... It was a welcome change for Emiko who was going to have a whole new set of crewmen underneath her. Granted, intelligence departments were small, but she would take what she could get. More importantly, she was on a much more prestigious ship, the USS Pioneer.

She wondered what her father would think of that. As much as she hoped that he would be impressed, he would probably be more impressed with whatever Artie was doing, whatever that was. She never asked whenever she called home and most the time, her mother mentioned nothing about him or her father.

Protocol was to get herself checked out by sickbay to make certain that she was medically cleared to take her station. Hence, the diminutive, Anglican-Japanese blend of a woman, walked into sickbay, ready to get a necessary evil out of the way.

"So, Kimba did we get the new equipment and pharmaceuticals we requested?" Hermia asked. As the Pharmacist, Nurse Rossi was also the Sickbay's nonofficial quartermaster.

"Yes, but they made some substitutions when it comes to the pharmaceuticals, they all make little difference, except one. I requested powerful analgesic, but they gave us a less effective one, I can use it as a base to synthesize the one we require, but it's going to take time, Doc."

"Okay, get on it." Hermia replied. Command She thought. It's a wonder they can find their arses even using both hands.

"Yes, Doc." Kimba said and left the office.

Seeing Emiko she called back. "Looks, like you've got a visitor, Doc."

"Okay, I'll be right out." Hermia replied.

Moments later she was in front of the new arrival. "Hi, I'm Doctor O'Rourke, what can I do for you Petty Officer?" she said.

Softly, pleasantly, but with an edge of authority, Emiko answered, "I'm just here to get my onboard physical, ma'am. Then I will get out of your hair." Officers rarely cared about the enlisted and why would anyone care about her?

"It's okay, it's what I'm for, so let's start with your name?" Hermia said in a reassuring tone. Hermia didn't play favourites, she treated all her patients the same, regardless of rank or station, with kindness and respect.

"Emiko Marley," the petty officer answered simply. It was best merely to answer the question that was asked without any elaboration.

"Thank you." Hermia said. "Now, please take a seat on one of the biobeds, and I'll bring up your medical file." She added approaching a standalone console and typing in the Petty Officer's name.

Emiko headed to the nearest biobed and hopped up on top of it, her legs dangling helplessly from one side. She looked pointedly at Hermia, silently daring her to say anything about her small stature. Hermia could see from Emiko's chart that she had occasional flare ups of irritable bowel syndrome and some sinusitis.

"So, have you got to see much of the ship yet?" Hermia asked as she programmed the biobed's scanner.

"No," Emiko answered simply, but her tone suspicious of the small talk that Hermia was offering.

"Well, you're a chatterbox aren't you?" Hermia said. "Please lay back, and I'll initiate the scan."

Emiko complied, swinging her legs onto the biobed and lying back; but responded huffily, "I'm in intelligence, ma'am. We are not in the habit of talking much. However, if you would like I could repeat this sentence in at least five other languages. Will that suffice?"

"That won't be necessary," Hermia said with a sigh. "Just keep still."

Feeling satisfied with the situation, Emiko smiled as daintily as a painted porcelain doll, but otherwise remained still for her scan, awaiting the outcome of her medical results.

The scan didn't take long and while she studied the results Hermia asked. "You seem very confrontational, have I said or done something to offend you?"

"No, ma'am," Emiko answered simply. She then sighed lightly and further explained, "I like to be efficient and industrious. Your scan will likely show some chronic IBS, maybe some hemorrhoids. I deal with them. I eat mostly healthy and exercise. I also have work to do and I have no desire to make a bad first impression on my new boss. The longer I am here, the less time I have to impress him."

"I appreciate your candour, and those conditions are present and appear to be under control, but it may help you to know that your Department head is female, not male."

"Ah," Emiko replied, silently berating herself for being so stupid as to not check that out, or at least being certain before she got onto the ship. "I see, ma'am. I will have to make certain that I double check the ship manifest before reporting in, ma'am. And could you make certain to immediately upload my results so that she can see that I was not taking leisure time, ma'am?"

"Of course." Hermia said. "You can leave now, if you like." She added.

"Thank you, ma'am," Emiko replied as she pushed herself off the biobed and landed with a soft thud. "I hope we will not see each other again, no offense intended, ma'am."

"None taken, Petty Officer." Hermia replied.

With that, Emiko made her way out of sickbay and headed off to meet her new superior officer.
