Mission: Episode 15 - The Evil That Lies Beneath
Location: Sickbay - Deck 5 - USS Pioneer
Timeline: MD002 1000 hrs

Upon entering sickbay, Narin recalled the counsel imparted by a friend early in his Starfleet career: it was always better to visit willingly than to be ordered. Admittedly, this friend happened to be a Chief Medical Officer that was frequently in pursuit of crew members for their routine check-ups. Since then, Narin attended his physical check-ups on a regular basis. He had no worries about his health, at least in terms of physical well-being. There were minor cuts and bruises as expected in his line of work, but nothing significant. For him, undergoing the check-up provided reassurance of his overall well-being.

He took a moment to look around. He had studied the blueprints and was familiar with the layout of the sickbay, however, as this was his first time stepping foot onto a Intrepid-class vessel, he reminded himself to take the actual space in. Blueprints could only provide so much information, experiencing the actual space was an entirely different matter.

He refrained from lingering at the doorway for too long. He didn’t want to obstruct the main entrance into the area, and he was vary of appearing peculiar. With those thoughts in mind, he stepped deeper into sickbay, hoping to locate the Chief Medical Officer.

Kimba noticed a new face acting a little peculiar. "Its okay, sir. The Doc is in her office, and don't worry, she doesn't bite." She told him in her New York accent.

Narin glanced toward the source of the voice and spotted the Petty Officer. He nodded appreciatively. "Good to know," he replied with a smile.

Hermia was in her office going over the medical records of those that had come aboard at Poseidon Station. She was also setting up the next week's roster. The Irish born CMO made a not to have Mac rundown anyone how was dodging their routine physical. The Ex-Marine Head Nurse could be quite persuasive.

Narin paused at the threshold of the office, spotting the CMO. “Excuse me, ma’am,” he began, approaching her respectfully. “I’m Lieutenant Narin Valen, I am the new Assistant Chief Science Officer.” he introduced himself. “Just arrived, and I am here to check in with you.”

"Nice to meet you, Narin Valen, I'm Hermia O'Rourke, but I respond to 'Doc', 'ma'am', 'sir', and not very often to 'Commander'." She said as she brought up his medical record.

“Nice to meet you as well, ma’am,” Narin replied. He elected to continue with "ma’am" for now, feeling the familiarity wasn't quite there yet to use "Doc," even though she had mentioned it was okay.

Hermia skimmed over his medical record. "Is there anything medically related that isn't in your record?" She asked.

"I believe everything pertinent should be there," replied Narin.

"You're Betazoid, its interesting that our people tend to go for jobs in medicine or the Sciences, isn't it?"

"Yes, it's quiet interesting. I suppose that our empathic abilities and strong intuition may play a role in that," he replied. As he spoke, he briefly thought of his sister, who had opted for a different path as an Intelligence officer instead.

"I say that, yet my own twin brother is a Marine Combat Engineer." Hermia said with a smile. "Unless you have any questions, go find yourself a biobed and we can get started on the physical." She added.

Narin chuckled softly at Hermia's remark. "Well, I suppose diversity keeps things interesting," he replied with a grin. "No questions for now, thank you." With a nod of acknowledgment, he made his way over to one of the biobeds.

Hermia followed Narin into the Sickbay proper, grabbing a medical tri-corder along the way and began programming it for Betazoid parameters.

Reaching the biobed she said. "Just sit still this won't take long." She then began the scan.

Narin nodded in acknowledgment and stayed relatively still as the doctor proceeded with her examination.

It didn't take long to complete the scan and Hermia studied the results.

"Congratulations, you appear to be in excellent health, except for a minor vitamin deficiency." Hermia said. "I'll write you a prescription and you you can have it filled by Kimba on the the way out. She's the brown haired nurse with the Brooklyn accent."

"Thank you, m'am," Narin replied with gratitude. Glancing towards Kimba, he added, "I'll be sure to pick those up on my way out."

"Well, unless you have any questions, you're free to go." Hermia said. "Nice meeting you, Narin."

"It was a pleasure meeting you too," Narin said as he stepped off the biobed. "I look forward to seeing you around the ship, ma'am." With a nod of gratitude, he headed over to Kimba to collect the prescribed vitamins. As he approached Kimba, he couldn't help but comment. "You were right, she doesn't bite."

"Told ya." Kimba said. Taking the prescription she added. "This will just be a minute."

"Never had a doubt," Narin responded. "Take your time, I'll wait."

"So, what made you go into Sciences?" Kimba asked.

"Both of my parents were academics on Betazoid," Narin explained. "I guess you could say I followed in their footsteps. And you? What drew you to medicine?"

"My parents own and run Rossi Pharmaceuticals which has a Pharmaceutical contract with Starfleet medical. I completed my pharmaceutical training, as I and my sister are to take over when our parents retire. I'd always wanted to help people, so in the meantime, I entered Starfleet and obtained my nursing credentials now I'm a nurse and the pharmacist." Kimba said. "I get meet a lot of people and help them feel better. I enjoy it."

"Your mother is Professor Rossi, then," Narin remarked. Though he hadn't met the woman personally, he remembered reading a publication authored by her in the past.

“And that’s rather admirable,” he added with a smile, "I don’t imagine a lot of others would have thought to join Starfleet being in your situation.”

"Thank you, I enjoy my work, but like every job it has its ups and downs." Kimba said. She then handed him a bottle of capsules. "Take on a day with food." She added.

Narin nodded. "I understand that. We all have our ups and downs, but as long as the ups outnumber the downs, it's worth it," he remarked. Accepting the bottle from her, he examined it closely. "One a day with a meal. Does it matter which meal? Morning, afternoon, or evening?"

"Indeed." She agreed. "As for the vitamins, I'd suggest mornings, it doesn't really matter as long as you're consistent." Kimba told him. "It was nice meeting you, Narin. Now if you'll excuse me I better look busy, or the Doc will send me after the crew who've missed their physicals."

"It was nice to meet you as well. And thank you for these," he said, gently shaking the bottle of vitamins. "I'll see you around," he added with a smile before leaving the sickbay.
