Decisions made.

359 words; about a 2 minute read

The first lifelong achievement that Paul made was graduating from Starfleet Academy. At long life, this felt like nothing like he had done before.

The next achievement was being assigned to the USS Pioneer as a member of the Flight Operations crew, as a junior officer.

Next came being promoted to Lieutenant and being named the Flight Operations chief.

Then he met Lyna. After 2 months of dating, he knew he was in love, another first for him.

Two months later, they were living together. They had their ups and downs, but they weathered the storms.

Six months later, he asked her to marry him. She didn't have to think about it, she answered 'yes' right away. Trying to arrange the wedding ceremony was difficult at best. Months past, and they still weren't married, but they were happy.

A year went by. There was a pregnancy scare, which Paul welcomed, but it turned out to be a false alarm.

Then while there was a lull on, they took that faithful trip to Bajor, where they visited an orphanage, and they met a Bajoran infant. The child crawled over to them and held her arms out to them. Paul picked her up and for the second time, he was in love. They adopted her, named her Anegn, and brought her back to the Pioneer.

They asked for and received larger quarters. Paul and Lyna tried to schedule their duty assignments so that one of them was always home with Anegn, but it didn't always work out that way. There was a Bajoran couple who had 2 small daughters. The wife stayed home with them, and agreed to watch Anegn when Paul and Lyna were on duty.

But Paul started worrying....what would happen if he and Lyna were both killed on a mission. If one died, the surviving parent would raise their child. So they decided to ask the Bajoran couple would they take Anegn if they both died...they agreed.

Paul started wondering if it would be better if they transferred to a safer assignment, maybe to Deep Space 9. There they could travel to Bajor often.

He started looking into it.
